GSPC Kick-Off Event

09/2017

The CCHF Grad School Prep Club has partnered with institutions across the Atlanta region for seven years now, to provide information and guidance on successfully applying to graduate school and preparing students for the experience.

This year it was decided to start the program a bit differently. We held a Fall 2017 Kick-off event for the 2017-2018 year of GSPC. The aim of the kick-off meeting was to bring together groups of professors and undergraduates from Spelman, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, and Agnes Scott, and introduce them to graduate students and professors from Emory and GA Tech. At the meeting, undergraduates were introduced to 4 professors and heard research talks centered around how/why a professor entered into their respective field and why research and continued-education was important. Additionally, undergraduates socialized with graduate students to identify potential mentors for the coming year and took part in a discussion with representatives from different support groups/clubs (i.e. NOBCChe and AWIS) available at Emory and GA Tech. The event concluded with a departmental tour of the Emory Chemistry building and the research labs.

As a kick-off event to the series of sessions being held in the coming months this was a great way to engage with the students and encourage strong engagement with graduate student mentors.
