Reflection from Jacob Burman:
Representing the CCHF at SERMACS 2017 in Charlotte, NC was a positive outreach experience. I attended a Diversity in Science Luncheon to better equip myself with tools to distinguish how I can contribute to the diversity in STEM fields across the board. During many of the poster sessions I saw a wide range of science from undergraduate students that I recognized and connected with in my mission of increasing the talented population of applicants to Emory and the CCHF programs.
The bulk of the work was geared toward the Grad-School Fair where there was a continuous stream of interested students to talk to about our organization, which was rewarding but exhausting to talk for almost four hours. An improvement to the system we currently have would most likely be 1-2 extra people for recruiting events so that there are adequate breaks which would allow a fuller experience of some missed seminars and other events.
